If that means that banshees are Caen Gwe Las, then let it be so!

I'd much rather have creative and unique settings that don't have to deal with all the baggage of D&D's legacy. Furthermore, wanting a similar concept but not wanting to use the 'accepted' word for whatever reason tends to garner an awful lot of hate. The downside of this is that coming up with unique monsters tends to rub people the wrong way nowadays. Then D&D became more or less mainstream, and this has familiarized pop culture with D&D's interpretations (banshees, giants and ogres, goblins, dwarves and elves and gnomes, etc.). Now, BG is set in D&D, and D&D has a grand and storied tradition of taking folklore names and making monsters out of them - even different monsters out of different names for the same thing. Now, 'banshee' is probably a bad example because that's actually an Irish word, but if you go to google translate and start throwing some phrases from English to Irish, you get words that could easily be in Pillars.

There is definite celtic influence on all the naming conventions in the area, and oh look, some of the monsters too! I always got the impression that they're called that because of the region. Ridiculous names like "Caen Gwe La" with a bunch of silly symbols and stuff instead of just 'banshee' or w/e But I digress.Į: I never actually answered the topic's question. That was probably the best improvement BG2 made, was a more focused adventure with better quests - a handful of large and complex quests, versus many throwaway quests. It's kind of a toss up between BG2 and Pillars, neither is what I would call stellar, but definitely serviceable, I guess? BG1's story was too short and underdeveloped. Not that I have authority, it's just that all these differences are more noticeable when experienced in close proximity. It's an adaptation, while Pillars was designed to be a video game.Īnd this is coming from someone who marathoned BG1/2 into Pillars just recently.

This is what I mean by license limitations. I just don't think the mage battles are the end all be all of combat design. And that should surprise no one.īG2 is obviously the vastly superior game in the series, which improves on a lot of the first game's issues, but it still succumbs to the same combat limitations of the DnD license. If going by the 1 to 1 rule, then Pillars utterly wrecks BG1. No hard counters.īaldur's Gate is a great game, which started a wonderful genre, and will always have a special place for that reason, but playing it today, there are a lot of issues from pacing, quest design, combat encounters (Gnoll stronghold respawn.). Classes overall have more to do in combat and way more abilities per class. Classes can be built in more varied ways.
